Irondale police hunt 3 suspects in home
invasionPublished: Tuesday, August 09, 2011, 12:46 PM

A police officer fired one shot during the incident, but no one was injured. Mangina deferred questions about the shooting to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

Mangina identified the suspects as Kyre Odoms, 18; Malcomb Sanders, 21, and Devin Miller, 18. They have not been formally charged in connection with Monday night's incident.

The ordeal began about 7:50 p.m. A teen was home alone when the group of four youths began to throw rocks through a window to gain entry to the house, Mangina said. One of them climbed through the broken glass and into the home.

The teen inside locked himself in a bathroom and called 911.

"Once the kid called police, our officers got on the scene pretty quickly," Mangina said.

Three of the burglars fled. The fourth was captured inside the home. At least one of those who fled was armed.

Irondale police could be heard on public safety radios calling in additional officers and asking for the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

Detectives found home electronics, including a flat screen television and an XBox 360, piled up and ready to be hauled out but that were left by doorways instead. Mangina said the teen victim recognized some of those involved as classmates at Shades Valley High School.

Burglaries and thefts in the area have been on the rise. There are several groups behind the increase, Mangina said, including possibly some of the suspects sought in the home invasion.

"We've made cases on them in the past, so we're familiar with them," he said.

The 17-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, is being held in the Irondale City Jail. Detectives will seek a first-degree burglary warrant against him this afternoon, at which time he could be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the other three suspects of interest should call Irondale police at 956-5990 or the department's tip line at 951-7547.
