 MESSAGE FROM YOUR MAYOR
TOMMY JOE ALEXANDER

Greetings:

I want to encourage you to keep an eye out for suspicious activities going on in your neighborhood.  We can hardly turn the TV on without seeing another copper theft.  We are not immune to this problem, and we all know that the police can’t be everywhere at the one time.  So I am asking for your help.  Be a nosy neighbor.  If it doesn’t look right it’s probably not.

Fall is here sooner than we thought.  We all are excited about college football but don’t forget about our local high school, Shades Valley Mountie’s Football Team.  Welcome Bill Smith, new Athletics Director and Football Coach.  The Mountie’s have a tough schedule, so go out and cheer for them.

The Irondale Library is 60 Years Old – The Greater Irondale Chamber of Commerce donated $60.00 to the library needs and challenges each of you to do the same.  Let’s show our support for one of the best libraries around.  Thank You Dell for all your hard work.

The Senior Citizens’ received a generous check from the late Owen Drake, our former State Representative at the last Council Meeting.  Also a check for Irondale’s Middle School was received at this council meeting.  This was money Owen allocated for our community days before he passed away.  Our many thanks.

This week we also lost Myrtle Kilgore, who was instrumental in establishing our Senior Citizens' Center, as well as building the Irondale Public Library.  She was a dedicated citizen of Irondale, serving on the city council herself for three terms.  She will be greatly missed by all of us.

Mark Your Calendar – Whistle Stop Festival - Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Marking the 20th Annual Whistle Stop Festival this year we have a great sponsor,
Benchmark Chrysler/Dodge & Fiat of Birmingham.

We would like to personally thank Mr. Terry Spitzer of  Benchmark Chrysler/Dodge & Fiat of Birmingham for his generous contribution making our 20th annual an event to

remember.  Benchmark Chrysler has a beautiful facility in Irondale offering comfort fo
r their customers with a lounge and wireless internet.  If you are in the market for an automobile or truck, stop in and see Terry Spitzer.  You will be glad you did.  On TV    his commercials are about “Customer First” approach.  And his motto is “We’re With You Down The Road” – Ask anyone who knows Terry Spitzer and they will tell you he literally lives this motto.  Thank you Terry for your business in Irondale!

Now more about the Whistle Stop Festival.  Historic Irondale’s Twentieth Annual Whistle Stop Festival will kick off on Friday night with Irondale’s National Night Out, featuring live music by the Charlie Soul Band. National Night Out is a yearly event to encourage greater cooperation between police and communities.

Saturday morning, the Whistle Stop Festival is sponsoring the Exchange Walk for Health. The walk to raise health awareness begins at the First Baptist Church of Irondale and concludes at the Main Stage in time for the festival’s 9am start.

The Whistle Stop Festival annually brings a wide variety of food, crafts, music, outdoor games, a video arcade and live college football on a projection screen.

The Whistle Stop Café will be serving on Saturday – 11:00 - 2:30
Get your
“Fried Green Tomato’s .
Also there will be Square Dancing in the Streets by the café and etc..

Hoop Dancing?? Well the Hula Hoop is very stylish in today’s modern world.  The Festival will feature (3) groups, Mettahoops from Homewood, Aurahoops from Pell City, and Hoop for Fitness from Inverness performing at 10 a.m. demonstrating the various styles of hoop dance.  We understand there will be some “Flaming Hulu Hoop Girls” right after the fireworks dancing in the crowds.

And by the way, your friend and Mayor, will  count down and launch the fireworks show at 8:15 p.m. in front of City Hall.

Our Finance Committee met and recommended to the Mayor and Council to give our dedicated employees a 3% raise effective October of this year.  We are happy to be able to do this and appreciate their loyalty.

Lastly I would like to invite you to attend “Coffee with the Mayor” on Thursday, September 29th, 2011.  Drop by anytime between 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and have

coffee and a donut with us.  Department Heads will be available to answer any questions you may have.

See you at the Whistle Stop Festival!
