Homewood mayor says city leaders are willing to have regional jail complex in Homewood

Homewood Mayor Scott McBrayer has let the Regional Jail Authority know that city leaders are willing to build the complex in Homewood, he told the City Council tonight.

Two sites being considered are Bagby Drive and Citation Court, where the city owns property, McBrayer said.

McBrayer, along with each member city's mayor, is a member of the authority.

The authority, composed of Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and Irondale, intends to save money for each member city by consolidating law enforcement services. Shared dispatchers, jail workers and other employees would work at the complex housing jail inmates from all four cities.

Once the land for the jail is selected, the authority will likely offer space to others. By charging a per diem cost to provide beds, food and security to those cities, the cost of operating the regional facility will be further reduced, officials said.
